The idea of skydiving tends to make people nervous, perhaps it’s the thought of flying through the air while plummeting towards the ground. This isn’t a chance everyone is willing to take and I can see why as it scared me half to death. Then again, there are just as many people who have already taken the plunge or are on the edge of their seat ready to go. A few years ago I decided to give it a go and threw myself out of a plane, yano just for s**ts and giggles and it was the best thing I ever did. It truly gives you the ultimate adrenaline rush that pushes you passed your boundaries and tests your ability to work through your fears. I loved the experience and there are so many reasons why you should face your fears and give it ago. Skydiving is the closest we as humans can get to flying, you feel pretty invincible, like a superhero powering through the sky. It’s unforgettable and you’ll remember it forever, you’ll be itching to hop back on a plane I can assure you!

I’m going to confess something, I’m afraid of heights so this was a very nerve-racking experience. As you go up in the plane you get such an adrenaline rush, the door opens and a blast of cold air hits your face, next thing you know you’re hanging out of the plane ready to jump. There is always the option to stay on board and step off the plane when you’ve landed but you don’t want to say “I almost did a skydive” do you? Take the leap and commit! Surprisingly, when I was looking out the plane all I could see was clouds, the ground was nowhere to be seen due to the fact I was 19,000ft up! This made me feel at ease somehow. Skydiving really tested my ability to conquer my fears, afterwards I couldn’t wait to do it again and felt empowered for doing something that truly scared me.

We all know that one person who can always top everything exciting you’ve done in your life. Well skydiving would give you ultimate bragging rights, unless they have done it themselves you’ll be seen as a proper dare devil! It’s always a great conversation starter too, when someone asks “whats the most exciting thing you’ve ever done?” Well this one time I threw myself out of a plane for fun! You’ll be hanging with the cool kids for sure!

The craziest part about skydiving is trusting a complete stranger with your life. You meet your instructor a matter of hours before you do your jump. Their job is to throw you out of a plane and not let you die, that is a huge responsibility. The most important thing is to listen to your instructor, do exactly what they tell you to do and cross your fingers that everything goes smoothly until your feet hit the ground. I’m probably not filling you with confidence right about now, am I?

The best reason of all is the incredible views you’ll see, it’s absolutely beautiful and is certainly an unforgettable experience. While the free-fall gives you a rush, when the shoot opens your heart rate steadies while you float down to the ground. You have the time to truly enjoy the view, you see the world in a whole new light. I’ve personally skydived in both Australia and New Zealand and would recommend either for the spectacular views.

Let’s look at the statistics shall we …. truth is, you’re more likely to be hit by a car while crossing the road than you’re skydiving. We all hear the stories about the parachute not opening on the odd occasion but all extreme sports carry there risks. To put your mind at ease, your equipment is checked, double and triple checked before you even board the plane. It may help you feel better to know you have a back-up parachute in the unlikely event the first doesn’t open. Remember that you’re not going solo, you aren’t expected to jump out of the plane without any training or practice. You’re strapped to a professional who does this daily, when I did mine in New Zealand my instructor already did 5 jumps beforehand.

Sky diving is amazing but you can’t do it anywhere, it’s all about location, location, location! The grey sky and plain buildings in Nottingham wouldn’t be worth the trip. Do a little research and decide exactly where you want to go, you could even plan your next holiday around a skydive. It’s not exactly cheapest activity so best to make it worth while.

Some people have the wrong idea about skydiving, I’ve been told more times than I can count that they couldn’t do it because they don’t like the feeling of being on a rollercoaster. I can assure it doesn’t feel like that, you’re gliding through the sky more than anything, well that is my experience of it.

So, have I convinced you to take the leap, experience beautiful views and get the ultimate adrenaline rush?

It looks amazing! I’ll be in Aus from February 2018 so it’s something I’ll definitely consider if I don’t let fear take over!
