What better way to get ready for Mardi Gras (Gay Pride) than to Tie Dye my own outfit!
I will be showing you how to do a spiral tie dye using 3 colours to create 6!
Step 1: Cover the floor, table whatever surface you are using, there is nothing worse than having dye on your new wooden floors.
Step 2: Prepare your colours, all fabric dyes will be different. I’ve got liquid ones which you mix with water, I didn’t want to spend extra money on bottles so I used old water bottles! Anyway to save money while travelling 🙂
Step 3: Soak t-shirt in water for 5-10 minutes. Some tutorials I’ve seen don’t soak the shirt before applying the dye but with the liquid dyes I used, you have to otherwise it will run straight off the fabric.
Step 4: Lay t-shirt out flat, pinch the middle point (or where you want the spiral to start) with 2 fingers and twist clockwise or anti clockwise it doesn’t make a different 🙂
Step 5: Put elastic bands around the shirt and apply colours overlaying each section starting with the lightest colour. Wrap in cling film and leave to set up to 24 hours.
Step 6: Hand wash to remove excess dye then wash in washing machine on its own (Just incase colours run).
Step 7: Finished! – Well done you have now made a rainbow spiral tie dye shirt!
There are so many styles of tie dye you can do, you just need to have fun and experiment with colours and different effects you can create. After our first attempt went so well myself and my friend Loz decided to try a couple of other styles 🙂
